The Rush of Writing

Iqra Nadir

Over the past few years, writing poetry and stories has been one of my focuses throughout school. Others would be uninterested, groaning at the mention of writing, especially poetry. On the other hand, I would be so excited to be able to have that creative freedom in writing something. Throughout time, I learned that poetry can be found anywhere, in anything. It can be short, or long, and even rhyme. It doesn’t have to be one specific way, while writing the normal boring essays would take out that creative freedom. I would feel relieved whenever the teacher would assign the class to write a poem for an assignment, rather than a boring essay or powerpoint explaining whatever we were learning about in class. Poetry was my escape and way of putting everything else aside to have fun with words, displaying raw emotions.

I remember reading a poem I wrote about myself for the first time in English class during my freshman year, it was the first big assignment of the year. I also created a pretty collage to go along with the poem which really tied with the theme of the poem. I still remember the reactions I got which is why I continue to write. Everyone was speechless and I felt like it was a good experience because I was able to talk about myself in an authentic way, instead of sugar coating everything.
