Summer of Irons

This summer PupilPrep worked with The Bronx High School of Science’s very own FeMaiden robotics team to instruct middle school students about STEM through fun, informative and creative workshops.

The collaboration featured remote workshops where high school students from the FeMaidens team and the Event Coordinators from PupilPrep hosted workshops in the rotations of engineering, programming, electronics, and marketing. All the weekly workshops ran on Saturday mornings and were free and accessible to our students!

Each rotation was led by hardworking high school students with a great expertise in their respective departments and they taught the eager students about hard and soft skills in CADing and learning marketing skills through design and presentations.

“We accomplished the main goal of providing free opportunities and resources to students in hopes of expanding their interests or even simply introducing a hobby. Even though we only reached a certain number of students, it is a step closer to fighting the unjust education system and fostering the growth of our future engineers, creators, and leaders,” said Tiffany Zheng, Chief Executive Officer of PupilPrep and Head of Marketing at FeMaidens.

Zheng, like many other members at PupilPrep believe events like the PupilPrep x FeMaidens workshops truly challenges the financial barriers that students face when it comes to gaining access towards STEM resources. At PupilPrep, our mentors not only instruct their mentees on informative lessons but also learn to understand students through a more empathetic and compassionate perspective.

“I thought the collaboration between PupilPrep and the FeMaidens team was unique and a wonderful experience especially from a host’s point of view because I was able to oversee how the young students would interact with the lessons and share their own skills and designs with us. It gives me hope, as a STEM student myself because with events like these, not only does it promote the benefits of free and accessible STEM resources but it also allows students to pursue their dreams despite their socioeconomic status and backgrounds,” stated Tasmia Afrin, Co-Executive Events Coordinator at PupilPrep.

As summer reaches an end and the 2022-2023 school year approaches, this collaboration taught us that as long as we continue to host more resourceful events and promote the importance of fighting the inequities of our education system, we can open doors to more opportunities.

PupilPrep Summer Bootcamp

Our Sunday Summer Bootcamp was an opportunity for young students to explore different interests and to have a fun educational day. Our mentees had the chance to have fun, chill out, and get the chance to win prizes. We read books, cooked yummy recipes, played games, and even learned about graphic design. We awarded two of our mentees featured on the right with slime kits for their achievements in the Bootcamp picked by a lottery system. The more events the students joined during the day, the better chance they had to win prizes!

PupilPrep Summer Internship

The PupilPrep Summer internship consisted of a series of workshops focused on work readiness skills such as LinkedIn, resume writing, and interviewing skills to build an interactive profile, as well as writing an article that we published. To promote entrepreneurship, we developed our own passion projects to allow them to develop their leadership and teamwork skills. For 4 weeks, our internship allowed us to meet 20 amazing students who were eager to learn and develop!

Our summer internship was four weeks full of learning and opportunities! Our interns learned about resume writing, making connections, curriculum building, and business planning. Our interns spent their fridays focusing on career building in the form of learning how to write emails professionally, ace interviews, and create stellar LinkedIn profiles.

Some of our favorites

We built team working and communication skills through warmups and for our curriculum building, we had them work together to create a presentation on dinosaurs

Make learning fun by using images and colors

Additionally, we also had our interns work on article writing, an important skill both inside and out the classroom. Our interns learned how to write eyecatching articles then used that to make articles of their own, covering subjects such as the advantages of video games to stress and its causes. Our business brainstorming had our interns fleshing out their business ideas and scoping potential competitors. Logo creation and brand names became fun activities to compare amongst themselves and they were able to bring their passion projects to life.

Finally, our interns presented their finished presentations and business pitches. We were able to congratulate Nadia Nesredin, Michelle Akem, and Braimah Eleshin Jr. on their amazing presentations!
